BEHIND THE NAME

When I was a little girl, as young as two or three years old, my grandfather would ask me to do little tasks like grab his newspaper, clip his nails, or comb his hair. For every task, he would offer a ‘brown dollar', and I would happily accept. It would be a few years before I learned a 'brown dollar’ was nothing more than a penny. For years, I thought this was something funny he just did with me and my brothers to get us to hang around and do chores for him, but I came to learn its something he’s done with all the children in the family including cousins, nieces and nephews. He always said it was to teach us the value of money, but what it really taught was the value of tradition, work ethic, and caring for others. 

 

Brown Dollar Entertainment is a thank you to my grandparents for the lessons they taught me. With storytelling through the mediums of film and television, Brown Dollar Entertainment aims to bring focus to these types of values being cultivated in families around the world.
